Speed Watch

23rd August 2017

The Member of Parliament for North West Leicestershire, Andrew Bridgen joined both Cllr John Clarke and Cllr Verge Richichi (also Chairman of the Council of the North West Leicestershire District Council) on a speed watch in Heather.

The data had been taken by the team over 28 days. 14 days in Heather including roads such as Pisca Lane, Swepstone Road and Mill lane. As well as 14 days in Ibstock on Leicester Road, Station Road, Melbourne Road and Battram Road in Battram.

The data collected will be shared with the Inspector Bhakta of Coalville Police to be inputted, analysed and actioned.

Speeds have been as high as 70mph in a 40 zone and 56mph in a 30 zone. In one 3 drivers were recorded; one doing 70mph, who had no tax, no MOT and no insurance either.

Andrew Bridgen MP states:

“I am proud to support the Councillors initiatives in the area. It is impressive that they aim to use the data collected to solve the problem of speeding in a different way. Cllr John Clarke has conducted research and is gathering support for a system which is used in Spain and Portugal, which I am liaising with the Department for Transport on to gather further backing.”

Cllr John Clarke states:

“I am conscious that we need to find a different solution to solve the issue of speeding. This system I have researched means that if one speeds past a sensor a trigger switches traffic lights further down the road to red. One does not get fined for speeding, and no points, but does get penalised if he/she goes through the lights on red. I am working with our MP to ensure this option is raised with the Ministers in the Department for Transport for their consideration.”
